Wall-mounted EV chargers
With over three quarters of electric vehicle charging taking place at home, it’s important to ensure that you’re using the right type of charging equipment in order to make the process as painless, cost-effective and, most importantly, as quick as possible.
What is a wall-mounted charger for electric vehicles?
A wall-mounted charger or chargepoint is a standalone charger, wired directly to your mains electricity supply, which enables you to quickly and easily put your car on charge.
Most wall-mounted units are fast chargers, delivering electricity at 7kW, which will (at least) halve the time it takes to charge your vehicle in comparison to using a 3kW slow charger. There are also 11kW and 22kW options, but these require a 3-phase power supply, which is uncommon in homes but can often be found in industrial or business premises. In most situations, a 7kW fast charger is the quickest method of charging at home and with one you could expect to fully charge a new MINI Electric in under four hours, or the latest Nissan Leaf (40kWh) in around six hours. Almost all vehicles can charge at this rate, making it ideal for home use where most charging takes place overnight.
In addition to these, there are ‘smart’ chargepoints that use wi-fi or Bluetooth to connect to apps on your smartphone. These can be programmed remotely to take advantage of cheaper electricity or limit the amount of energy in the battery to avoid overheating and generally increase its lifespan. Although smart chargers are more expensive to buy than “standard” units, the Government’s OLEV subsidy only applies to this type of charger so they can actually work out cheaper. To find out more about this, please call or message us and we’ll gladly help.
To be able to fit a wall-mounted charger you‘ll need a garage, driveway or off-street parking close to your home. Please note that you are not allowed to run the lead across a public footpath or road, and it will need to be installed by a professional electrician.
AB Electrical supply and fit a wide range of vehicle chargers, being fully accredited and are on hand to advise you of all the available options.

Do I qualify for the EVHS grant?
To encourage drivers to ditch fossil fuel and move to electric power, the Government is currently offering financial incentives through its Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS). By buying, owning or leasing a new Electric Vehicle and if you also have dedicated off-street parking at your property, you’ll be entitled to a grant that covers 75% of the purchase and installation of a smart chargepoint, up to a maximum of £350. What’s more, you can currently apply for a grant for up to two vehicles, so perfect for the 2-car family.
To make things even easier, AB Electrical will check that you qualify and then apply for the grant on your behalf (this is a requirement of the scheme). They will then charge you the price of the installation, less the grant amount applied for, and receive the grant directly from the Government scheme. It couldn’t be simpler.
How do I get an EV charge point installed?
The easiest way is to use a company like AB Electrical, that can both advise on and install a variety of chargers, ensuring that you are presented with the best options to suit your specific needs. The installer will check on the suitability of your preferred location together with your home’s electrical circuitry in advance of the installation and, most importantly, they will have been approved by the manufacturer of the charger, giving you complete peace of mind. They will also handle the OLEV grant application process on your behalf, ensuring that not only do you pay less but that the entire installation process is stress-free.
You can of course buy the unit on its own and then choose your own installer, however they will need to be accredited by the manufacturer of your chosen device
